It doesn’t matter what it does. It only matters HOW it does it.

Squarespace Login Link

The Back Story

Squarespace is a Saas-based content management system that allows businesses and individuals to maintain beautiful websites, blogs and online stores. Squarespace is remarkably responsive. Even with the beautiful video imagery in the homepage header, sizing changes as sensibly as one can move a mouse. Given its utility, it is surprising to find a usability issue with the site.

The Problem

When the homepage browser window is resized to 1000 pixels wide, the login link disappears. Unlike other responsive websites, where the navigation links are place into the side navigation bar, there was no trace of the login link on the Squarespace page.

The Resolution

  • Keep the login link in place no matter what the size is.
  • Move the login link to the navigation when the site is sized smaller than 1000px.
  • Place a second login link elsewhere in the page.

Airport Security Flow

The Back Story

Few things in life are more annoying than waiting in the security line at the airport. Understanding that physical security is a paramount concern, the screening process acts as a significant bottleneck for passengers trying to board their flight.

The Problem

After removing their shoes and sending their personal affects through the x-ray conveyer, patrons wait in line to enter a full body scanner. Once through the body scan, patrons wait for the 'OK' to collect their items from the x-ray machine. It is at this point that a new backup forms around the exit point of the x-ray scanner. Passengers are forced to wait in an additional queue and weave their way through a crowd in order to collect their belongings.

The Resolution

Relocate the full body scanner seven feet towards the direction of the security line entrance. Then form two exits from the scanner to allow patrons to exit closer to their belongings awaiting in the x-ray conveyer belt. Patrons will form a more natural stream without the bottleneck surrounding the perpendicularly situated x-ray system.
